Cosmic Dive 04: Chasing the Sun Line
How Locational Astrology is a tool for Travel and Relocation
There is a loneliness to travelling that I craved. There is a loneliness in my life most of the time, despite being married and having a daughter who I adore 24/7, but there is a loneliness that runs so deep in my soul that no man can touch it, no friend alleviate it. For me, the traveling lifestyle was always the lifestyle I yearned for. Perhaps it’s that feeling of being outside the culture, knowing no one, nowhere to fit in, the objective watcher, not speaking the language. There is time for reflection and to grieve mistakes. I am ruthlessly self-evaluating. At times, to the point of inertia. At home, I am often melancholic and mercurial. My mother calls it “moody”.
I married a moody man. In our house, I’m the peace-keeper, the coin-counter, the dream-weaver. Living here in a bus in Costa Rica, I get to shed the trappings of suburbia and “wife” and just be me. My daughter is like an appendage that swings out from my body, a piece of me that will eventually break off and run away to live a life more wild than any I could imagine, but who, for now, needs me, fiercely. It’s nice to be needed fiercely, I suppose. I never feel tired of loving her, but it does drive one to seek out moments of solitude. Like now…writing in a bus on the Costa Rican ocean side in the dead of night.
Part of what I wanted to write about in this Substack was my belief and personal experience that certain places affect us differently around the globe. That there’s an energy to places, unique to that place and unique to the person whose traveling through it. Ever since that dream in Cuba, I have been fascinated by locational astrology. Why did I have that dream in that place? Why Cuba? Why are we called to visit certain destinations or set down roots in certain places? How can one place feel like home while another feels repulsive? How can one place feel easy and another so hard?
Astrology is a tool to gain self-awareness, explore the subconscious context of intimate relationships, and challenge yourself to do deeper self-work.
Locational Astrology, or “Astrocartography”, is a sub-set of Astrology, spearheaded by astrologer Jim Lewis in the 1970s, that compares your astrological birth chart to a map of the globe. It’s for travellers and relocation. It’s the idea that your energy can shift based on where you are; that the planets affect you differently depending on where you are on the planet, and that effect is unique to you.
For me, it’s the idea that your “moodiness” isn’t a forever characteristic, but perhaps just a symptom of living in the wrong place.
In Ontario, I live on my Saturn Line. In my natal birth chart, the planet Saturn is located in the 4th House of Family. Saturn is a maleficent planet, meaning it is characterized by heavy emotions and karmic challenges. It’s influence is great for doing intricate, detailed work, conducting mental acrobatics, engaging in studious efforts, or working out family karma…but it sucks long-term.
When I sit down to write an Astrocartography Report for a client, I look at the location of the planets in their natal birth chart and then I compare them to a map of the world. There are 40 lines that criss-cross the globe unique to YOU at the moment of your birth, and depending on where you travel or live, they exert an influence and make you feel different, energetically.
Let me be clear: there are no bad lines just as there are no bad astrological signs, but some planet’s influences are more challenging for a person to live on given their natal chart and their unique astrological mapping.
Generally speaking, the most positive lines to live on or travel to are the Sun Line, the Moon Line, and the Jupiter Line.
Here in Dominical, Costa Rica, I am at the Zenith of my Sun Line, the apex, the very core of my natal Sun Line. I feel invigorated, light and free. I feel physically and emotionally well. I feel a recommitment to physical health and well-being, and feel capable of taking care of myself. I am easy-going and don’t take things too seriously. In the least, I don’t feel melancholic and moody.
Now, you could say, of COURSE you feel good — you’re in Costa Rica! Pura Vida, baby! Palm trees and surf! But I would argue that I have lived in other beautiful beach destinations and felt misaligned, ill at ease and unhealthy in body, mind and spirit. Having travelled the globe obsessively for the past 24 years, I can attest to feeling energetically different in different locations, and locational astrology has been a tool
I have used to analyze these subconscious behaviour changes and better understand myself, my motivations, and my values. In some way, surviving the hard times is easier when you can put your experience in the context of locational astrology. It shifts the lens and broadens the perspective, lessening the tendency to self-blame or place blame on others when things aren’t going well, allowing one to see the bigger picture and look critically at the greater lessons being learned.
I want to keep travelling with my daughter, but in order to do that, I have to hustle. I have to hustle here on Substack and write great travel stories to earn paid subscribers. I have to deliver excellent creative work at my part-time job working in regenerative fashion. And I have to homeschool and meet the needs of my family. One way I am greasing the travel wagon wheels is by offering to write five Astrocartography Reports per month. Five is the max I can take on and still meet my other responsibilities.
How does it work? You email me your request for an Astrocartography reading and I will email you a 15 page report that explores your birth location, your current location, and identifies the most positive places on the planet for you to travel or relocate to. The more information you can provide about places of interest or circumstances of travel, the better. If there are certain destinations that have always pulled at your heart strings, maybe there is a reason your soul is calling you to go. Find out what planetary influences you are operating under and how they are affecting you. Each report is personalized and unique to you. I will never share or sell your personal information.
To get the ball rolling, I am only charging $111CDN per report.
Interested? Email me at cosmicdivebar@gmail.com
Once the first five spots are filled, I’ll put your name on a wait list for the next month. I’ll be updating availability on the @cosmicdivebar instagram page so if you haven’t found me there, please click follow.
And hey, if you like what I’m doing here and want to support my travel writing, upgrade to paid now.
Thank you to all my new subscribers. Writing for myself is one of the most freeing acts of self love that I have ever made and I am so grateful that you are along for the journey. Until next week…
